This weekend, I went all the way to Hamburg in order to see the only gig by The Frames in Germany. Let me tell you, every single kilometre was absolutely worth it: Glen and the boys played about two hours of awesome, hand-made, emotional rock music. Fitzcarraldo, Revelate, God Bless Mom, Lay Me Down, Seven Day Mile, What Happens When The Heart Just Stops… you name it, they played it (unexpected: Kraftwerk’s Autobahn). And I finally got my hands on their rather obscure, finally re-released debut album Another Love Song. Gee, I wish I could go to Dublin and see one of the four gigs they play in their hometown (1x Olympia Theatre, 1x Vicar Street, 2x Whelan’s); they are all sold-out, though.

Here are some musical impressions:

The Frames – Seven Day Mile:

The Frames – Revelate:

Opening act was Duke Special from Belfast – I was impressed.
Duke Special – Mockingbird Wish Me Luck:

Fun Fact: the venue had the ubercool German name Übel & Gefährlich, which translates roughly to Evil & Dangerous.

Some of you might have noticed – either I told you or you guessed it from my post frequency – that I have been working quite a bit during the last weeks. Today, the fruits of this work finally went online: we relaunched 5PRIME.com, my employer’s corporate website. Apart from the new design and improved usability, we have added, e.g., a new product line, some pages about application areas and an extended literature search.

Kudos to Marian, who created a little surprise that you might want to check out, and his buddy Kristian, for a nudge into the right direction when the two of us did not see the wood for the trees.

Just navigate to the homepage (you have to select your country first) and enjoy the video!

Yesterday, Berta, Isa, Chris and me went to a very special lecture. The subject? Folk. The lecture hall? The O2. The lecturer? Robert Allen Zimmerman, better known as Bob Dylan.

He might be old, he might be mumbling and grumpy, but the concert was awesome anyway. Bob, whose hat had the biggest flap, played the organ and told his stories while his band, all dressed in black, stayed very much invisible in the background. Whenever he reached for the harmonica, the whole audience cheered in joy.
Here are some of the great songs he played:

Highway 61 Revisited

All along the Watchtower

It was a great night. Thank you, Bob! And thank you, Isa!

Wednesday there was a bring-a-dish-from-your-home-country-party, but apart from the fact that our initially sneered at frankfurters were gone in the blink of an eye there’s not much to tell. If you ever have to prepare German food for a large number of people, just buy good ol’ sausages and mustard. That might not be as impressive as the delicious Tartiflette from France or a mouth-watering Spanish omelette, but it’s popular finger food, can be prepared within some minutes and is still tasty when it’s not warm anymore. Depending on where you are it might even be cheap. Downside: some people will assume that you can’t cook a proper meal. Don’t do it if you want to impress girls…
But enough about the grandeur of German sausages, I wanted to tell you another story.

Our way to this eating binge was more interesting. Chris and I left the house and went to the Belgard stop where we had to wait quite some time for the next Luas. Our boredom did not last long: a bunch of teenage Irish girls showed up. They were all dressed in the ubiquitous tracksuits and were really young; maybe twelve or thirteen years old. While we just stood next to the rails and waited, they were running around us, climbed the benches and used their high-pitched voices to shout annoying (ridiculous) lines at us. Chris managed to keep a straight face, I had a really hard time to hold back the laughter.

Then they tried to hit on us. “Can I have your number? Can I have your number?” a girl asked me with her thick Dublin accent “I’ve got a black marker and a red one. I’ll write your number in red on my arm. Red for love.” Gosh, this was too much for me. I don’t know what came over me, but for some reason I suddenly had to think of a song and replied: “It’s 222 2222, I got an answering machine that can talk to you.”

The rest of the evening this BossHoss song was stuck in my head:

By the way: this is a cover of De La Soul’s Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey).

The new Erasmus students arrived. Well, at least most of them. There are not too many; just about twenty. Most of them are French. Then there are some from Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic.

On Wednesday we invited them to go to Captain Americas in Tallaght with us so that we could get to know each other. It was nice. That evening Carmen taught me the lyrics of the famos Chiqui Chiqui by Rodolfo Chikilicuatre. “El chiqui chiqui mola mogollon…”

Well, maybe she should not have done it: I found my secret talent and like to sing el Chiqui Chiqui all day long. It is really addictive. See for yourself:

Yesterday, I was invited to Berta’s new flat in city centre where I met her, Chris, Isa A, Isa B, Isma, Carmen, Oscar and Alejandro. Yes, you already guessed it: I delighted my Spanish friends with my new-found talent as well as a special variation of it. Well, we had a nice evening anyway.

Yesterday, we had a closed-book CA in the Software Development class. The task was to implement some basic I/O and functions that did some basic calculation with arrays of doubles. Three of the functions were very similar and after half an hour I was basically done – 90 minutes before we had to hand in our source code.

The other seemed to be still working. I read the instructions and specifications on the sheet again. And again. No, everything done. I did not dare to leave that early – a dilemma. Some minutes, which I spent with code clean-up, slight refactoring, documentation, later, I still seemed to be the only one, who was finished. Okay, let’s test, monkey-test. Still about 45 minutes to kill. Hm, boring. I uploaded my work on moodle and left.

Later, I found out that Stefan and Lukas/Klaus had a similar problem. Each of them was finished and did not want to be the only one, who leaves reeeally early, as well. Wasted time. Next time we’ll probably agree on some secret code noise:
