Dalkey

On Wednesday Heleen and I took the DART to Dalkey, a small, noble coastal village South of Dun Laoghaire. It tooks ages to get there (Tallaght-Dublin-Dalkey), but it was worth it.
We took a walk along Coliemore Road, sneaked peaks through the gates of mansions and visited Goats Castle and St. Begnets, where an actress gave us a tour while playing the role of a medieval maid. I declined her offer to pull some teeth or amputate an arm in order to get rid of the rattle in my head politely – my health insurance would not pay these exotic treatments.

Murals of Derry

As already pointed out in the last post of this series about the trip to the North, I am interested in the Conflict. In twelfth grade, I wrote my Facharbeit, a propedeutic project, in this field. Thus, I was keen to see it all myself (especially after having listened to the Irishman the evening before). I’m glad that I could convince my mates to join me on my way to the Bogside, a poor neighbourhood that was 100% Irish Catholic and the centre of the so-called „Troubles“ in the 1970s.

Between 1969 and 1972 the Bogside was part of „Free Derry“, a barricaded, autonomous area that was considered to be a no-go area for British forces. A lot of important historic events took place in this area of Derry (e.g. Bloody Sunday, Battle of the Bogside, Civil Right Marches). I hope the following commented photos of the area can give you an impression of the murals of the „People’s Gallery“ and the Bogside in general. Diesen Beitrag weiterlesen »

There, we checked into the cosy Derry City Independent Hostel. At least about half of us did. Diesen Beitrag weiterlesen »

Giant’s Causeway

The Giant’s Causeway. Hm, it is really difficult to find words other than „Wow“ that can describe what you feel when you stand there, watch a wonder of nature in total astonishment, feel the stiff breeze and taste the salt of the sea on your lips. I really advise you to experience it yourself.

Until then, you might want to see some of my photos: Diesen Beitrag weiterlesen »
